(MI- GOV '06) DeVos + DeLay = DeLicious

Wed May 10, 2006 at 02:41:49 PM PDT

Today in Michigan a big deal is being made of this:
Gov. Jennifer Granholm and her husband recently had to pay more than $800 in penalties and interest after failing to file two unemployment insurance reports on time.

Granholm and her husband said they were unaware of the lien on their former residence and paid the fine promptly.  Which hasn't stopped the Dick DeVos campaign from commenting:

A spokesman for Granholm's Republican rival, Dick DeVos, said the governor also has had problems with filing campaign finance reports for her Executive Office Administrative Account.

"It's an unfortunate trend that we see given the numerous IRS violations with her 527 account," John Truscott said.

(more below)
AND State GOP Chairman Saul Anuzis:
"The details seem to slip this governor time and time again," he said. "This reflects an inability to manage things and is maybe why the state's in the shape it is today."

Which, fair enough, it's a campaign, you expect to get a little dirty.  I don't see any of these issues really gaining any traction.  It's just fodder to keep the attack on anything that comes their way.

DeVos has had a lot of ads hitting the air here in the Metro Detroit area (at least as far as I've noticed).  All of them say roughly the same thing:
Dick Devos is a business leader.  Michigan is in financial trouble.  Granholm somehow made GM, Ford and Chrysler unprofitable all at the same time and forced them to layoff thousands of workers and close plants, and all of Michigan's problems are her fault.  At least that's what I gather.  He seems to be focused on eliminating the Single Business Tax because it's unfair to businessmen and somehow depriving our weakened state economy of even more money will somehow make it better.  (This tax, by the way, is scheduled to go off the books in 2009.  It's not like it's a permanent part of the tax code.)  Anyhow, these phony-baloney dust-ups over things that are inconsequential or temporary got me to thinking about my previous post (and no I won't link to it because it was rather long and boring) about all that is wrong with DeVos.
In summary:
Manages and finances several PACS
Financed the push for the school voucher system
Owner/President of Amway (now called Alticor and Quixtar)
referred to by republican family friends as "The mean one" (you have to take my word for it.)

SO.  I went searching around the web, typed in DeVos and DeLay and was delightfully surprised by this story from Progressive Liberal Democrat:

House Majority Whip Tom DeLay, a onetime Amway salesman, also remains close to the company. `Mother Jones' magazine, which has followed Amway's shenanigans closely, reported last fall that Myrick owes her election to the company -- almost half of her total campaign funds came from Amway people."

which is from a 1997 Molly Ivins column.

If Michigan politics and Tom DeLay interest you at all, I recommend clicking on the Progressive Liberal Democrat link.  Anyhow, that made my day.  I think Granholm should turn this into a :30 TV spot and a :60 radio spot and ride it into November.  But that's just me.
