MI GOV '06 - It's a hit with the kids (Marketing)

Thu Jul 27, 2006 at 02:59:02 PM PDT

I have to admit, I'm a little frustrated with how poorly the Granholm campaign appears to be using any sort of non-media marketing.
One thing I look forward to during an election cycle are the fun ways I get to show support for my preferred candidate.  Whether it's a "Clinton - The Cure for the Blues" button or the John Kerry retro t-shirt I was sporting in '04, I like being able to show my support in a smart and fun way.
Even though this is just a gubenatorial race, I kind of feel Granholm is lacking in that department.  More after the leap.
I believe good marketing is essential for any campaign, and doubly so when dealing with an opponnent with the kind of money that makes Ned Lamont look poor.  And by marketing I'm referring to the traditional yard signs, bumper stickers, pins, t-shirts, totes, patches, etc.

If you look at what  Granholm Webstore has to offer, there's one t-shirt and one bumper sticker available.  Compare that to Devos Webstore https://www.rapiddonor.com/DeVos/Browse.aspx and you can see quite the contrast. He has items as little as $2 (a braclet) to an autographed copy of his book for $50, and a lot of different choices in between.

If Granholm has more product out there, I haven't been able to find it, and if it does exist and I can't find it easily then there's problems.  So, here's my beef:  I'm not going to pay $20 for a t-shirt.  Ever.  Especially one I wouldn't normally wear.  (I still rock the Kerry one now and then).  The amount of product and cost of product make it cost prohibitive to show public support for her, which kinda ticks me off.

I believe your advertising can't get much better than people showing visual support for someone.  I think the more people see in public the support for a candidate the more you put that candidate at the forefront of people's minds.  (Like everytime I get cut off by someone sporting a W'04 bumper sticker I grind my teeth a little, but he's on my mind when he normally wouldn't be).  It feels like buying a t-shirt is practically considered a donation ($20?  seriously?) and it shouldn't be.  I think you should be grateful for getting as much free advertising as possible.

My Solution:
Wide array of products sold at cost.  $2 iron-ons, they can be real simple (g4g, Granholm '06, whatever), at cost t-shirts in a wide variety of hip and traditional styles, patches you can sew onto your own clothes and back packs, 1" monochromatic pins like every small unsigned band has, anything you can put on a person that people can spot in public and draws attention to her and this race.

In addition:
I'd like to see a better use of technology.  Viral videos.  Maybe provide media (pics, video clips, music, etc.) to the public and have a contest for who can make the most compelling :30 web ad.  (Although, don't host it on YouTube, make it a submit for approval thing or else the Repugs will slaughter it).

I guess I'd just like to see the campaign be more interactive.  I'd like it to be incredibly easy for people to get involved on some level, whether it's picking up a $1 1" button or spending two days making a :30 web ad that may end up being hosted on the Granholm for Governor website.

Not everyone's going to be able to be fully involved in a campaign, and I'd like for anyone who wants to show support to be able to do so.

I know, I'm throwing stones from the sidelines here, and I'm sure Granholm/Cherry have much bigger things to worry about.
